HOME > OZONE GENERATORS
Be careful you don't buy an ozone "freshener" instead of an air purifier!
It's
a big problem.
For several years, industrial ozone generators have been used
to help cover up odor problems, such as fire odors.
This was usually done when nobody was
present in a home, and it involved performing
"shock treatments,"
which are concentrated doses
of ozone.
Such ozone devices should not be used as occupied room air purifiers. They belong only in the arsenal of trained professionals who know and understand the risks involved and can employ them safely for limited, special purposes.
Unfortunately, today some of these ozone
generators are now being sold as standalone "air
purifiers." Those selling them may
even actually suggest that it is ok to use these
continuously while loved ones and even pets are
in close range!
Be aware that many "air purifiers" being sold today are really ozone generators, and
the people who buy them often don't even know
it. Don't let this be you.
If a product requires little or no cleaning, has no filter cartridge or other collector, or claims to cover more than ONE room at a time, you should IMMEDIATELY assume it may be an ozone generator.
Air simply cannot flow through doors, walls, or solid objects; thus it is not reasonable to expect any single purifier can cover an entire home. However, often, ozone generator sellers will make this claim. This should always be a red flag.
You should know that while very
small amounts of trace ozone from common appliances can
in fact revert to oxygen in minutes, larger
amounts, such as those typically produced by ozone
generators, may irritate your lungs. In fact,
the EPA and American
Lung Association both clearly advise against the use of ozone generators
in homes. We
recommend you follow this advice and stay away
from products which generate such high levels
of ozone.
Sometimes
these units are disguised using
words such as "active oxygen," or "plasma"
or similar terms, but they are still ozone
generators. When you read claims that one purifier
can clean your whole home, this may be a big red flag that the unit is really
a disguised ozone generator.
Some units have selectable ozone emitters which are best avoided, even if they can supposedly
be "turned off" or "adjusted."
This is because you simply cannot be
sure what amount of ozone is safe for a particular
room area. You might then suddenly find that another
family member, child, or guest has accidentally
turned up the ozone to an unhealthy level. Never purchase any product with a built-in ozone "sanitizer" regardless of any assurance that is "safe" or "harmless."
Tip 1: If you can smell it, you don't
want it. Ozone has a distinct chemical or "bleach
like" odor. If an air cleaner puts out ANY
such odor, you may have really been sold an ozone
generator! Air exiting a purifier should be fairly
neutral in smell.
Tip 2: Some ozone
generator sellers have added a weak ion producer
to their ozone units. They may only mention the
ions and intentionally hide the unit's PRIMARY
output, which is ozone gas. This means you could
still end up with an ozone generator.
You can help protect yourself by looking for any
of the red flags indicated in the list below.
Note that the Fresh Air Machine has no such ozone "features" and completely
meets all government standards. In addition, it contains unique OZONE SHIELD technology, which is designed to combat household ozone.
You can avoid accidentally purchasing an ozone generator device by looking for any of the following red flags:

Claims
to cover thousands of square feet or an
entire home (air doesn't go through walls!).
Very likely to be ozone! |
2 |
"Sanitize"

likely to be ozone! |
3 |
Uses
misleading terms like "Active oxygen,"

These really mean ozone! |

your nasal membranes!) |

Claims
"just after a thunderstorm" or

Adjustable
